The Society, as the Market Drayton Railway Preservation Society, was established on 1st January 1992 when the concept was launched to try to restore part or all of the former Nantwich to Market Drayton Railway as far north as Cox Bank on the outskirts of Audlem, about 4 miles of track. Until 1967 this had been a double track through line, of Great Western Railway vintage, from Wellington (Telford West) to Crewe. The name change to the Nantwich & Market Drayton Railway Society took effect from the 1st January 2010.

Market Drayton Station c. 1912
The junction station at Market Drayton was typical GWR and itself finally came to grief in 1994 when the site was sold for a supermarket. However, prior to the final crunch some of the buildings and artefacts were dismantled by the Society.
